SDI Proposal: Architechtural Design

Been to long since my last post! need to pick up my game. I haven't explained yet that i have changed by project.

Instead of designing an entirely new building i have decided to take a closer look into revamping heritage buildings.

I have decided to create review and create a new design for renevations on an old heritage Hopkiln (created in 1860ish) once again down in the Huon Valley at my farm. (I will upload some photos of what the building currently looks like.

The project came to a halt because after i had done plans on the how the orginal building looks, i couldn't find any information about laws to do with renovating heritage buildings which i needed to know in order to start drawing up designs, but thanks to one of my teachers showing me a website (www.heritage.tas.gov.au/guiding_principles.html) i found guide lines that need to be followed when renovating heritage buildings.

So with this in mind the plan this week is to finish doing designs for the new building. Will upload these ASAP.

Architechtural Design - Personal reflection

Our class have been asked to write a reflective piece on our projects progress so far this year.

There are many ways that this subject differs from other subjects, mainly because it is student directored. This means that the student is the leader for the subject and manage it how they want.
It was very easy for me to decide what i wanted to base my project around. As i wish to be an architect later in life, the choice was obvious. I wanted to design a house.
There have been a few problems so far this year, such as deciding on the final design for my house. I have been through about 3 different designs, also i have been having problems understanding all the different parts this subject requires, for example going in and visiting the teachers to discuss my progress.
I feel that i have met most of the subjects requirements pretty well.

• I have viewed most of the class presentations.
• I have been updating my twitter account often enough, i think.
• I could improve on the amount of blog posts i have done.
• I have been working for around 5 hours p/w.
• I have been visiting the moodle site often enough to have a solid idea of whats going on. Although i haven't completed all the tasks.
• I definantly haven't been communicating with the teachers very efficiently, and need to start coming in once a week.
• I think i have completed an SDI proposal for the TQA (not entierly sure what that is)

I feel that i have already learnt alot in this year. For example i have increased my skills in computer 3D modeling. Managing my time sufficiently to progress at a steady rate. I have also learned about the different parts of a building required to create a eco friendly low impact house design.

Architechtural Design Update no.2

Haven't posted anything for the past few weeks. My SDI project is going pretty good, had a slight hick-up where i changed the design completly. Only a few parts will remain the same. I will upload the basic Google Sketch-up model of my last design (screen shots that is) i did if i can work out how to.. And the new designs etc. As for the mentor situation i can't find any contact information for the architectural firm i did work experience with.. especially seeing as i can't remember what they where called. I have a friend whos dad is an architect i was thinking of asking him to mentor me.

Architechtural Design update no.1

The past week or two i have started doing some basic sketches. These include things such as floor plans and 3D drawing on what i imagine the end result will look like. There will be a few things i will probably modify as the designing goes on. I have also started a small model on google sketch up, getting some parts from my designs right on Sketch up is hard, especially the circular windows.
Haven't found a mentor as such, but will email the architectural firm i did work experience at in 2008, hopefully one of them will be willing to help me out.

SDI Project Proposal

As i wish to go to the school of Architechture next year, i thought i should base my student directed inquirery on some sort of Architechtural design. Orignially i was going to redesign some renovations for my home, which is i think from the late 1800s, although i am mildly interested in this area i didn't think it was ambitious enough and would not be enough to keep me occupied for the whole year.

Last year i did housing and design. For my major project in that subject i designed a low impact eco home down at my farm. This didn't go to well, and we where only given about 2 months to do it anyway. I want to retry this idea and seeing as i have a whole year i'll be able to make it alot better than my last one. I haven't entierly thought out a enquirey question that can go with this project yet. I was thinking i could not only draw up the designs but also model the house on the computer (either 3Ds max or Google Sketch-up) and also do an actual 3D model out of wood or cardboard.
